So it's second half of 2010.06

Ok, this is not to start a flame war, just to hope for news/hints/grapevine, is there any hope to get 2010.06?

At first I can understand 2010.03 is delayed to accommodate showstopper fixes, but with quite a few builds after b134 as of now, is it really a point to have something like b134a? what are the showstoppers exactly?

Not that I actually wait for 2010.x but I am waiting the day /dev to be thawed..

Ivan.

I don't want to start anything nasty either, but from prior experience
around this topic, "it is ready when it is ready" would seem to be the
best answer to this question.

I am not even sure now which build they are going to base the next
official release upon. Would certainly not be impressed if we get
134b, with the "b" only due to the mass-rename of "Sun" to "Oracle".

It will probably be 134-something, since that's what's been 'frozen'
for a while now. While you may not be impressed with a 1-letter change
since 134a, take a look at the changes to OpenSolaris since 2008.11,
and you'll see things have progressed and improved significantly.
Oracle has said multiple times, too, that it will be out in the first
half of 2010, so we shouldn't have to wait too much longer - about 12
days, by my count.

For those of us who have to worry about making pay rolls, the No. 1 item that's always in our mind is that we have enough cash in the bank to make the pay roll.

For Oracle/Ellison, I believe their No. 1 priority right now is to make sure that the Sun acquisition shows a sign of, or at least leading to, a positive cash flow. Everything that does not directly deal with profits is not even secondary, but detracting--at least at the present time. Once this sign of profitability is hopefully established, we can then reasonably expect Ellison's lieutenants to put their minds on the 2010.whatever/if-ever.

In the meantime, I have gone back to Solaris 10--in fact I have been doing that even before the recent turmoil. I don't know if anyone still remembers this, but when the Open Solaris project first started a little more than 5 years ago, the freely downloadable Solaris 10 was all we got.

The Open Solaris project needs a lot of soul searching--personally I think it has become hopelessly stagnant, disappointingly going nowhere, and was wasting a lot of my time. (I wouldn't mind continue to "play" with the OpenSolaris distro if I saw it has a chance of success--but no, I have actually totally given up & switched back to Solaris proper.) A little disruption now is maybe what the doctor would order.

It's such a shame that this isn't a community project, but rather a following.

For something that was supposed to be so Open, it seems awfully closed...

I agree, it would be nice if Oracle changed the way they communicate.
I think they should eventually, if they want to maintain the support
from the opensolaris community.
I hope they understand that products without a community are worth a lot
less......

Just some late breaking news:

I hope t they are able to meet the target date.
I think /dev will be unfrozen after the next stable opensolaris release is made available to download and it will probably start at b138.

Ok, enough for now.

I'll install a BSD flavour in the week-end. Waiting for too long, now.

See you, OpenSolaris...

After a brief brainstorm with my collegues, I can safely say that also in Italy 2010.2H came. One of them also postulated that it came to Italy before than in CA, but I just can't elaborate more on this.
And Osol is missing with no info about it and at least one bug that makes if of no use for a production site.
I hope for a fast porting of newer ZFS to FreeBSD.

Just wondering if anyone from Oracle is able to comment on the roadmap that inspired this thread or can we assume OpenSolaris has been put to bed?
I just searched the Oracle site and not seen anything!

No more than they've been able to already.

You can if you want to, but unless Oracle have announced that it's been put to bed, then it's still very much playing in the garden.

Cheeri,
Calum.
I have begiu to love the word "polymorphism". With Steven Hahn now gone, and ditto most of Sun's Beijing team members who were primarily responsible for the desktop portion of Solaris/OpenSolaris, it is probably very naive to insist that OpenSolaris, as in the "OpenSolaris liveCD", is not already dead, or at least in an indefinite sleep state.

(For those of us who are using OpenSolaris laptops, the experiences abound that a sleeping OpenSolaris laptop may never wake up.) :-(

However, when the word OpenSolaris is used as in the context of the "OpenSolaris project", then it is definitely alive and kicking. In many aspects, more vivid than ever. Among many other things, no doubt we are seeing substantially increased interests in Milax, and more particularly, the NexantaOS. Keep in mind that the Solaris proper (Solaris 10u8) is also part of the OpenSolaris project.
